September was a very crazy month for the Grogans. As most of you know, Kimberly had a break out race in Louisville (Ironman Louisville) and won the womens amatuer title. After a night sleep, she decided to take her slot & return to the October Kona race. Of course we discussed what this would mean, but I don't know how much we both really thought it through.
And so started the craziness.
First off, I was very happy & proud of my stud athlete. She just crushed all the other women amatuers & won her division by some 20+ minutes. But the battle for training time began as soon as we got back to Orlando. You see, I had signed up for Ironman Florida a 11 months earlier & knew what needed to be done to get me in shape. I, by no means didn't intend to do what Kona Kimbo did in Louisville, but still wanted to have a solid race. I was under the impression Kimberly would be in cruise control. That didn't happen.
She was soon back riding 5 or 6 or 7 hours. Running at 4am. I got my early morning turns too. But it was crazy. We were in a constant battle for training time.
Well, we struggled to find time with everything in our lives with both of us trying to train long. I was just starting & she was in full swing.
And so it began. 2.4 nights on couch. 112 f-bombs thrown. 26.2 slammed doors. Since then, we have had many long talks. We have rejoined forces and are now teammates again. The storm has passed & Kona will be here in 8 short days.
Moral of the story...a husband & a wife with two kids training long at the same time don't work for no one. Trust me.
